Electrician Checklist for Homeowners

Electrical Tips

Electrician Checklist WiresWhen your electrician is at your home working on something, make sure you get the most out of him. Here is a great checklist of items that you probably have around your house that you should ask your electrician to check on before he leaves. While not all of these items are life or death, having them reviewed periodically by your technician can give you some peace of mind.

Loose Outlets

Ask your electrician to make sure any outlet covers are fully secured. Loose outlet covers can expose wires, which can be a health and fire hazard, especially when in easy reach of young children or pets.

GFCI & AFCI’s

Make sure your electrician periodically checks and tests your GFCI and AFCI plugs. GFCI’s and AFCI’s are meant to protect from shock and electrocution as well as fire hazards in your home, but do you no good if they aren’t properly working. Your electrician should be able to run a quick test to assess their ability to keep your home and family safe.

Ceiling Fans

While ceiling fans typically have long lifespans, it’s still a good idea to have your electrician check them out. A loose mount or blade could be a safety hazard, and it could also make your fan less effective in general.

High Ceiling Lighting

Don’t try to fix something in your home that could put you at danger. Leave it up to the professionals. If your high ceiling lights are blown out, ask your electrician to replace or fix them. They will have the necessary equipment to do the job right.

Outdoor Outlets

You can also ask your electrician to double check on your outdoor outlets. They will make sure they are clear of debris like dirt and leaves, as well make sure they won’t create a safety hazard for your family in the near future.

Service Panels & Breakers

It’s always a good idea to ask your electrician to check on your home’s service panel or breaker. Your electrician can make sure that your home’s electrical load hasn’t exceeded the capacity of your breaker, which is crucial to preventing power outages.
