As an electrical company, we often get a host of questions about home improvement from Kansas City homeowners and businessowners. One we often hear is “What is your opinion on LED bulbs?” Many people aren’t really sure what LED means and how LED bulbs differ from standard ones. So, Jeremy Electrical will explain what LED bulbs are, how they differ, and why we LOVE them.
What Does LED Even Mean?
LED stands for light-emitting diode. In a nutshell, that means an LED light is a miniature light source encased in a plastic lens. It produces light when electrons inside the diode are excited by the flow of electricity. This releases energy in the form of light. But since the light from LED bulbs come from a chip, they create almost no heat. This means they won’t burn out as quickly as standard bulbs, increasing the bulbs’ lifespans enormously. You could theoretically install an LED in your newborn’s room and not have to replace it until he/she go off to college.

Why We Love LED Light Bulbs
We really like LED light bulbs because they have so many more possibilities than standard light bulbs. LED bulbs are 85% more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs and more than 10% more efficient than fluorescent bulbs. They use minimal energy to operate and last a ridiculously long time. Plus they come in several sizes, wattages, and shapes, so you can use them virtually anywhere you would use an incandescent or fluorescent bulb.
We would suggest one thing when installing LED lights, though. Make sure not to install them in existing dimming outlets. They are not adaptable for a standard dimmer and will not perform properly and burn out more quickly. Consult with an electrician who can help you install the correct dimming system for LED lights.
